Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Basic Grade Medical Scientist - Histology to join our laboratory team. The successful candidate will assist in the routine processing and coordination of laboratory services, ensuring the highest standards in patient care and laboratory efficiency. This role requires competence in performing laboratory tests, processing, and authorising results under the guidance of the Senior Medical Scientist and Laboratory Manager.
This position also provides an opportunity for participation in multi-disciplinary on-call duties following relevant training.
Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Operations & Quality Assurance
Assist in writing, maintaining, and enforcing laboratory procedures and best practices.
Support the implementation of quality management programmes focused on patient care, performance measurement, and client satisfaction.
Perform scientific work to meet INAB and JCI Accreditation Standards under the direction of senior staff.
Manage multiple concurrent testing and prioritise workload effectively during peak periods.
Collaborate with staff to introduce and adapt to new technologies.
Register and maintain custody of laboratory stocks.
Report and investigate non-conformances, complaints, and defects in supplies and equipment.
Participate in research projects in collaboration with medical and scientific staff.
Engage in continuous professional development through self-learning and formal training.
Staff & Communication
Assist in training and development of laboratory team members.
Communicate effectively with colleagues, hospital departments, and clients to ensure smooth operation of laboratory services.
Uphold professionalism, punctuality, and a commitment to teamwork.
Health & Safety
Adhere to safety procedures and ensure compliance with the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Act.
Assist in the development and implementation of accident prevention and management procedures in the laboratory.
Quality & Information Management
Participate in internal and external quality control and assurance programmes.
Support the development of laboratory information systems and data reporting mechanisms.
Maintain compliance with accreditation and professional practice guidelines.
Requirements:
Qualifications:
CORU Registration is essential.
Experience:
Minimum of one year in-service training across all laboratory disciplines.
Experience in Histology is essential.
Experience in Cut Up is advantageous.
Post-qualification experience is desirable.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong organisational and coordination skills to support laboratory management.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to adapt to the evolving healthcare landscape and laboratory technologies.
Understanding of quality control procedures and accreditation criteria.
Proficiency in laboratory information systems and IT applications supporting laboratory functions is desirable.
