Assistant Scientific Officer

Location: Stormont
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week
Pay Rate: £13.75 per hour

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Scientific Officer (ASO) to join the DSIB Virology team at Stormont on an initial three-month placement.

DSIB Virology provides an important statutory and diagnostic service to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), the farming community and commercial customers across Northern Ireland. The laboratory tests samples for the presence of viruses, viral antibodies, suspected epizootic diseases and notifiable diseases.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a range of laboratory and administrative duties, including:

  • Collecting, sorting and opening samples and recording any non-conformances on Excel spreadsheets, reporting issues to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Inputting sample data into the DSIB DU Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Ensuring samples are correctly and clearly labelled.
  • Preparing samples for diagnostic testing.
  • Carrying out a broad range of microbiological laboratory techniques.
  • Working in accordance with the standards and requirements of ISO 17025.
  • Working effectively as part of a team to deliver accurate diagnostic results within specified timescales.
  • Adhering to all relevant health and safety requirements within a microbiological laboratory environment.
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory records, including working with Excel spreadsheets, scanning, filing and emailing documentation to clients.
  • Disposing of laboratory waste appropriately.
  • Undertaking routine cleanliness, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Carrying out any other duties reasonably required by management.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs, including:
    • A Science subject
    • Mathematics
    • English Language
  • Grades A-C* (or equivalent) in the specified subjects.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • The ability to work flexible hours when required.
