Post-Mortem Room Attendant
Location: Stormont
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week
Pay Rate: £13.75 per hour
About the Role:
The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) is seeking a Post Mortem Room Attendant to join the team at its Post Mortem Unit (PMU) at Stormont.
The PMU provides statutory and diagnostic services to DAERA, the farming community and commercial customers. The successful candidate will support veterinary and laboratory staff in the examination and processing of animal specimens and carcasses, while ensuring that high standards of safety, cleanliness and quality are maintained.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will assist with a range of duties, including:
- Receiving, unloading and preparing animal carcasses submitted for post-mortem examination.
- Assisting with the dissection of carcasses and removal of organs and samples for further laboratory testing.
- Supporting Veterinary Pathologists during post-mortem examinations.
- Using knives and specialist equipment safely and effectively.
- Handling and securing live animals to facilitate veterinary examination.
- Assisting with or undertaking the euthanasia of livestock and other animals where required.
- Transferring animal tissues for disposal and assisting with the day-to-day operation of the incinerator.
- Cleaning and maintaining the post-mortem suite using detergents, disinfectants, water hoses and power hoses.
- Washing and sterilising equipment and utensils used during examinations.
- Maintaining knives and laboratory equipment and reporting any faults.
- Monitoring and maintaining appropriate stock levels of consumables.
- Preparing, recording, packaging, labelling and dispatching samples for further testing.
- Entering data and scheduling tests using the DSIB Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Assisting in other laboratory areas, including histopathology and parasitology, as required.
- Maintaining accurate records and working in accordance with AFBI quality standards, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ISO accreditation requirements.
- Working effectively as part of a team and undertaking other duties as required by management.
Essential Requirements
Applicants should have:
- A minimum of 5 GCSEs, including Science, Mathematics and English Language, at Grades A*-C (or equivalent).
- Effective communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- The ability to work flexible hours when required.
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
- A general science background.
- Previous experience working in a laboratory environment.
- Experience handling animals or working in a scientific, veterinary or similar environment.
