Title of Position: Senior Architect
Pay Scale: €77,445 - €103,925
Division: Estates and Construction Management Unit, International Protection and Integration Division
Location: Headquarters, Dublin
Role of the Senior Architect
The post of Senior Architect is a full-time position, based in Dublin working within a multi-disciplinary team reporting to the Head of Estates and Construction Management. S/he will undertake a range of duties in design, construction and advisory projects and any other duties assigned from time to time as appropriate to the position.
Principal Duties
The precise range of duties will vary over time according to the priorities of the planned and ongoing projects, but will include the following:
- Planning, organizing, managing, coordinating, and monitoring work programs as per the business plan.
- Providing and overseeing architectural services for various construction projects, including renovations, conservation of State Properties, and construction of accommodation centers.
- Managing all aspects of construction projects from property search to final handover.
- Leading the development of design and accommodation guidelines for DCEDIY International Protection.
- Managing public sector construction procurement processes according to best practices and standardized procedures.
- Collaborating with business units, local authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to create cost-effective and timely design solutions.
- Developing and overseeing tender documents and procurement strategies.
- Creating regular work schedules for properties in the portfolio.
- Ensuring compliance with legislative codes and public procurement requirements, and staying updated on building design trends.
- Contributing to broader DCEDIY strategies, aligning with national policies on architecture, climate action plans, and government design principles.
- Developing a Climate Action Roadmap for state-owned properties.
- Providing compliance advice for existing facilities.
- Formulating and adapting policies to meet Government and EU directives, building regulations, and standards.
- Assisting in developing evaluation and prioritization mechanisms.
- Managing and developing staff as needed.
- Inspecting sites and buildings to evaluate progress and quality of work.
- Performing other duties as assigned for the Senior Architect role.
Training
On-the-job training is provided/encouraged. Facilities are also provided for attendance at courses, conferences, etc., relating to the role.
Requirements
Candidates must on or before the closing date:
- Hold the right to work in Ireland.
- Hold a professional qualification in Architecture as prescribed under the Building Control Act 2007, or an equivalent qualification.
- Have at least five years of relevant post-qualification experience, including three years in a senior role managing multi-disciplinary projects.
- Be registered or eligible for registration as an Architect under the Building Control Act 2007 without further assessment.
- Have extensive experience in building design and detailing, including sketch plans, working drawings, and specifications.
- Have a proven track record in designing energy efficiency retrofits and decarbonisation projects.
- Understand current and emerging national and international trends in architectural design and sustainable development.
- Be knowledgeable about current legislative requirements and recent changes affecting building design and construction.
- Be aware of national and international climate action policies.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills to represent their Department effectively and build strong working relationships.
- Demonstrate strong teamwork skills and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Have a good working knowledge of Irish Building Regulations, particularly regarding energy efficiency, sustainability, universal access, fire safety, and health and safety.
In addition to the requirements above, the following is desirable:
- An ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines on multiple projects simultaneously;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to non-specialist decision-makers;
- Knowledge of current and evolving construction industry issues;
- Knowledge of modern methods of construction (MMC);
- RIAI Conservation Accreditation and/or experience of architectural design for heritage building projects;
- Knowledge of the Capital Works Management Framework and the Public Works suite of contracts and documents;
- Good knowledge of the Infrastructure Guidelines, public procurement requirements and procedures;
- Strong technical and design skills (candidates called for interview will be required to present a portfolio demonstrating these skills);
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills and a proven record of achievement in their career to date;
- Commitment to continuing professional learning and development;
- Proficiency in Auto CAD and Revit.
- A current full driving license (Category B) and/or have access to a vehicle
