Assistant Scientific Officer
Location: Stormont
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week
Pay Rate: £13.75 per hour
About the Role
We are seeking a Assistant Scientific Officer to join our team and support the delivery of high-quality diagnostic testing within a busy microbiology laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of laboratory and administrative duties, including:
- Receiving, collecting, sorting and opening samples, identifying and recording any non-conformances and reporting these to the Laboratory Manager.
- Entering sample information accurately onto the DSIB DU Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Ensuring samples are correctly labelled and traceable throughout the testing process.
- Preparing samples for laboratory testing.
- Carrying out a broad range of microbiological laboratory techniques following appropriate procedures.
- Working in accordance with the requirements of ISO 17025 and maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy.
- Working effectively as part of a team to deliver diagnostic results within specified timescales.
- Following all laboratory health and safety procedures and regulations.
- Maintaining accurate laboratory records, including the use of Excel spreadsheets.
- Scanning, filing and emailing relevant documentation to clients.
- Assisting with the disposal of laboratory waste.
- Maintaining routine cleanliness of the laboratory and supporting the calibration and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Undertaking any other duties reasonably required by management.

Essential Criteria
Applicants must have:
- A minimum of 5 GCSEs, including a science subject, at Grades A-C* (or equivalent/higher qualification).
- At least 6 months' relevant experience working in a laboratory.
