The Role: Maintenance Craftsperson - Electrician
JOB SUMMARY
The Southern Trust Estates Department provides a critical service to the Trust. Estates directly impacts on frontline clinical care and delivery, infection prevention and control, and efficiency and sustainability across the Trust. The effectiveness of the Estates service is governed by the skills; experience, professionalism and productivity of the Estates trade staff.
The post holder will be responsible for maintaining building fabric and services throughout the estate in line with his / her core specialist skills and experience as and when required by the trust. The post holder will also be required to work as part of a team in providing a comprehensive repair and maintenance service, involving routine and non-routine activities to a wide range of electrical equipment & building fabric and services.
KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The post-holder will be required to carry out a range of duties which may include the following:-
- Diagnose and repair faults in electrical installations, plant and equipment, to deal with new situations as they arise and to pass on knowledge to others.
- Understand the working of electrical systems in Healthcare facilities.
- Overhaul and service electrical systems to ensure efficient running.
- Manufacture, erect and install new work.
- Report to the Senior Officer and note defects or malfunctioning of machinery or plant.
- Co-operate with other members of staff and outside contractors in executing the work.
- Comply with all relevant Health & Safety Legislation at all times and in particular observe a safe and healthy system of work.
- Use all the appropriate tools and equipment of the trade.
- Participate in an On-call rota to provide emergency cover.
- Keep up to date with Health and Safety Regulations regarding areas that may be a health hazard, e.g. barrier nursing, laundry equipment, bedpan washers, dishwashers, sterilizers and domestic washing machines.
- Medical gases (Entonox etc.) changing cylinders, leak checks and keeping all relevant records.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance inspection and commissioning tests in accordance with the Trust procedures.
- Completion of job cards and timesheets
- Organise and collect materials.
- While on duty and on call to carry Trust communication devices (mobile phone and/or two-way radios) to facilitate immediate response to emergencies.
- Follow and interpret drawings and specifications and maintenance manuals.
- Instruct and supervise maintenance assistants.
- To carry out work at facilities were patients and residents who may have violent or aggressive behaviour.
- Work in community on equipment in private dwellings. Close proximity/contact to elderly, sick and unknown illnesses and viruses. Liaise with District Nurses, Trust Home Care, personnel and Engineer on-call.
- To liaise with Engineering Supervisor regarding plant or equipment failures and to request the supply of goods and/or service as necessary.
- Undertakes inspection and commissioning tests for the installation and issues the appropriate completion certificates
- Apply for relevant work permits where necessary.
- Have an adequate knowledge of modern laundry equipment e.g. computerised and automated machinery
- To work in accordance with Health Technical Memorandum on (HTM 06-02) LV systems.
- Calibrate a wide range of computerised and electronic equipment.
- Undertake on-call duties working alone to independently remedy fault or danger.
- Undertake multi-skilled training and carry out multi-skilled working in all facilities.
- Carry out basic maintenance on the following systems following training
- Plumbing, taps, wastes, bedpan washers and heating systems
- Work on refrigeration, air conditioning systems including testing and fault finding.
- Work on electrical and mechanical components on equipment i.e. laundry and catering equipment
- Carry out procedures for generator testing and power failures, including keeping record of voltage, current and temperature readings etc.
- Liaise with supplies service agents regarding fault diagnosis on electronic equipment.
- To have experience and be able to fault find or electronic circuit and computerised control systems i.e. BMS, laundry equipment and carry out repairs including component replacement.
- Carry out testing and inspection of electrical installations.
- Provide training and technical advice to colleagues and maintenance assistance.
- Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Senior Officer to meet the needs of the service
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
The post holder will be required to:

- Co-operate fully with regard to Trust policies and procedures relating to infection prevention and control.
- All employees of the trust are legally responsible for all records held, created or used as part of their business within the Trust including patients/clients, corporate and administrative records whether paper-based or electronic and also including emails. All such records are public records and are accessible to the general public, with limited exception, under the Freedom of Information act 2000 the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and the Data Protection Acts 1998. Employees are required to be conversant with the Trusts policy and procedures on records management and to seek advice if in doubt.
- Take responsibility for his/her own ongoing learning and development, including full participation in KSF Development Reviews/appraisals, in order to maximise his/her potential and continue to meet the demands of the post.
- Represent the Trust's commitment to providing the highest possible standard of service to patients/clients and members of the public, by treating all those with whom he/she comes into contact in the course of work, in a pleasant, courteous and respectful manner. Seek to engage and involve service users and members of the public in keeping with the Trust's Personal and Public Involvement Strategy and as appropriate to the job role.
- Available / able to work any 5 days out of 7 over the 24 hour period, which may include on-call / stand-by / sleep-in duties, shifts, night duty, weekends and Public Holidays if required immediately on appointment or at a later stage following commencement in response to changing demands of the service.
Hours of work: Full-time 37.5 hours
Requirements:
- Recognised and registered CITB or EITB apprenticeship or equivalent approved training
- 2 years post qualification experience with at least one years' experience of electrical maintenance work.
- City & Guilds of London Craft Certificate in Electrical (C&G 2382) or NVQ Level III Electrical or another equivalent approved qualification
OR
- Applicants substantively in post in the Health & Personal Social Services on 1 August 1986 and having served the recognised apprenticeship will be eligible to apply to this post, notwithstanding the above qualification requirement.
Other: Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment. This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.
