The Role: Maintenance Assistant

JOB SUMMARY

The post holder is to carry out unsupervised minor repairs and minor maintenance routines on a range of electrical, mechanical, and building equipment and have the ability to operate plant and equipment associated with these tasks. To assist Maintenance Craftsperson's as required in carrying out a range of Mechanical, Electrical and Building duties. Be suitably trained to acquire elements of other skills with the intention of reaching levels of flexibility and competence to enable them to perform specific semi-skilled elements where appropriate.

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Undertake unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work, related to his/her training and/or experience.
  • To use the relevant tools and equipment to carry out any minor repairs or maintenance routines.
  • To assist, when required, the Maintenance Craftsperson's to carry out repairs and planned maintenance routines.
  • To carry out other labouring duties as required on a day to day basis.
  • Clear blocked drains and sewers.
  • To keep records of work carried out using IT systems within the Estates Department.
  • Record consumption figures for engineering services etc. oil, water, electricity, gas, etc.
  • Assisting in the moving and transporting of equipment and goods within Trust.
  • Operating a pressure washer to clean areas and equipment within the Trust.
  • Good house-keeping of workshops, plant rooms and installations including routine inspection and lubrication of mechanical plant.
  • Keep grounds tidy including lifting of litter, emptying litter bins, cleaning roofs and gutters.
  • Collection and disposal of refuge from various centres throughout the hospital site and facilities.
  • Carry out duties at the Waste Transfer Station (this may involve working a rota which may include weekend working). Collection of clinical waste from designated area to transfer point for final collection by contractor including confirmation and signature for bins collected.
  • Removal, cleaning and refitting of building fixtures and fittings such as: light covers, radiator covers, ventilation grilles, blinds etc.
  • Participation in training complying with HSAW regulations.
  • Any other general requirement as appropriate to the post and location.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The post holder will be required to:

  • Assist the organisation in fulfilling its statutory duties under Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 to promote equality of opportunity and good relations and under the Disability Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.   • Co-operate fully with regard to Trust policies and procedures relating to infection prevention and control.
  • Take responsibility to minimise the Trust's environmental impact wherever possible. This will include recycling, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use. Helping to reduce paper waste by minimising printing/copying and reducing water usage, reporting faults and heating/cooling concerns promptly and minimising travel.

Employees are required to be conversant with the Trust policy and procedures on records management and to seek advice if in doubt.

This Job Description will be subject to review in the light of changing circumstances and is not intended to be rigid and inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which the individual works. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.

It is a standard condition that all Trust staff may be required to serve at any location within the Trust's area, as needs of the service demand.

Hours of work: Full-Time - 37.5 hours

Requirements:

  • Experience working in an Electrical/Mechanical/Building environment
  • Experience of using Basic Tools as appropriate to a maintenance environment

Other: Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment. This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.

In Return: £11.45 per hour
