The Role: Our client based in Newry require an Essential Skills Literacy Tutor to join their company and become an integral part of the team. The role will require tutor to plan, prepare and deliver qualifications to participants from entry level up to Level 2 and to provide continuous guidance and support to them to optimise their learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial assessments and formulate the literacy needs of participants and agree in conjunction with Programme Coordinator/Essential Skills Co-Ordinator suitable training routes for participants and provide information for Personal Training Plans and update accordingly.
  • Plan and deliver Essential Skills literacy qualifications and other training courses in line with Awarding Body requirements to participants using appropriate learning materials and training methods, and in line with individual needs and ability.
  • Prepare appropriate teaching materials and methods suitable for individual paced learning within a small group teaching environment and support individuals through their training helping them with any difficulties they may have.
  • Support, monitor, review, and report back on participants' progress to Essential Skills Co-ordinator on targets set.
  • Report all requirements on the TFS App ensuring it is a live record.
  • Stimulate and promote effective, learner-centred independent learning strategies for participants of all levels of ability to enable them to progress.
  • Create Schemes of Work and Lesson Plans which are contextualised as much as possible to ensure structured sessions are provided ensuring training is stimulating, educational and takes account of the diverse needs of the client group.
  • Ensure all lessons are fully prepared, that learning outcomes are made clear and that progress against them is measured.
  • Ensure that all paperwork/documentation is completed in line with ETI quality standards and Department for the Economy requirements.
  • Work alongside programme staff to develop a progression strategy for each participant i.e. to ensure that each participant progresses to suitable destination on completion of their training.
  • Any other duty which may reasonably be required from time to time.

  • Demonstrate commitment through the completion of all tasks allocated by attending staff and development opportunities to ensure that professional competency is maintained.
  • Ensure that all safeguarding procedures are followed as outlined in safeguarding manual.

Technical competencies (qualifications and training)

  • A degree obtained at a university in the UK or the Republic of Ireland, of which Literacy forms a minimum of 50% of the subject studied, or a degree obtained at any other university, provided the Department accepts the standard and content of that degree as equivalent to those stated above (E)
  • A relevant Teaching Qualification in related discipline or a willingness to undertake the Certificate in Teaching (CiT) qualification.
  • PGCE, B Ed, Certificate in Teaching (UUJ), or Diploma in Teaching and Management of Essential Skills
  • Good IT skills - to present data using Microsoft packages or suitable alternative (E)

Essential requirements

  • Proven experience of working with young people with a disability or health condition and families from disadvantaged backgrounds. (D)
  • Highly competent in using ICT with excellent working knowledge of MS Office Suite to include Sharepoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. (E)
  • 1 years' experience of delivering / teaching young people in Numeracy enabling them to progress them on their journey and find employment. (D)
  • Proven track record of achieving high levels of retention and achievement in class (D)
  • Experience of managing challenging behaviours in class (D)

  • Youth work Teaching / pastoral care approach to assisting young people to progress through their qualifications while maintaining professional boundaries. (E)
