The Role: Caterer / Cook with Cleaning Duties

JOB SUMMARY

Residential homes in SHSCT provide long-term care for a range of young people between the ages of 10 to 18 years, with a variety of needs.

The Cook will work closely with other staff members in providing a caring environment and will be responsible for the preparation and cooking of meals and the maintenance and cleanliness of the kitchen and other areas of the home, as well as other duties appropriate to the role.

The Cook will be required to understand and adhere to HACCP, ensuring that methods of preparation, production and presentation comply with current Food Safety Legislation and to comply with all Catering Policies, Procedures, Safety Regulations including COSHH.

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparation of meals and snacks and assist with food service to young people. This will include purchasing, preparing and cooking healthy, nutritious meals from scratch and reheating food when required, i.e. cook-chill. The cook will also lead other support staff within the kitchen as required.
  • To have knowledge of and meet nutritional and dietary requirements and ensure compliance in relation to allergens.
  • To understand and adhere to HACCP and ensure accurate recording and monitoring of HACCP forms and all relevant temperature records including fridge, delivery, cooking and reheating records.
  • To ensure quality is maintained in regard to procedure, practices, portion control and presentation.
  • Ensure personal hygiene and food hygiene standards are achieved and maintained.
  • Encourage the young people to participate in meal preparation and menu planning where appropriate, as well as washing and tidying up.
  • General kitchen duties to include cleaning and disinfecting work surfaces and floors, loading/ unloading dishwasher and putting away of items.
  • Undertake domestic duties within the home including laundry and cleaning of all areas of the home as required.
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles, removal of waste bags and placement for collection. This includes an active role in ensuring the home engages in recycling and disposing of waste appropriately.
  • To report any sightings of pests or infestations, any defective equipment /services, or any issues regarding food quality to a supervisor or manager. Make necessary requests for repairs through to maintenance/estates.
  • Awareness of infection control measures relating to cooking and cleaning.
  • Participate in training of new staff and development of staff to ensure they are competent to undertake their duties.
  • To deal with telephone queries and take appropriate action as necessary.
  • Cash handling duties as required. This includes management of a budget for household items to ensure the correct and economical use of provisions, consumables and equipment and recording of any expenditure as appropriate.
  • To attend in service training and when applicable attend courses which may be held outside the work location.
  • To monitor stock levels and order goods ensuring that correct procedures are followed with regard to receipt and storage of food and consumables and other stock items.
  • Wear protective clothing provided, observe personal hygiene regulations, and comply with all Health and Safety, HAACP, COSHH, Food Hygiene procedures and regulations.
  • Be responsible for opening and locking up of work areas and safe storage of chemicals and equipment where necessary.
  • Contribute to the development of young people's life skills as appropriate. This includes taking them grocery shopping, teaching cooking skills and helping them understand budgeting as it pertains to purchase of household items.
  • Co-operate with other trust staff and work together as a team.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Any other duties of according to the needs of the service, appropriate to the grade as may be assigned by the Team Leader.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The post holder will be required to:

  • Contribute to ensuring the highest standards of environmental cleanliness within your designated area of work.
  • Co-operate fully with regard to Trust policies and procedures relating to infection prevention and control.
  • Take responsibility to minimise the Trust's environmental impact wherever possible. This will include recycling, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use. Helping to reduce paper waste by minimising printing/copying and reducing water usage, reporting faults and heating/cooling concerns promptly and minimising travel.
  • All employees of the Organisation are legally responsible for all records held, created or used as part of their business within the [org name] including patients/clients, corporate and administrative records whether paper-based or electronic and also including emails. All such records are public records and are accessible to the general public, with limited exceptions, under the Freedom of Information act 2000 the Environmental Information Regulations 2004, the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Employees are required to be conversant with the Trust policy and procedures on records management and to seek advice if in doubt.
  • Take responsibility for his/her own ongoing learning and development, in order to maximise his/her potential and continue to meet the demands of the post.

This Job Description will be subject to review in the light of changing circumstances and is not intended to be rigid and inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which the individual works. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.

It is a standard condition that all Trust staff may be required to serve at any location within the Trust's area, as needs of the service demand.

Hours of work: Full-Time - 37.5 hours (18.75 hours split between two locations)

Requirements:

  • Have a minimum of 1 years' previous experience of cooking meals in a paid capacity.
  • Have completed Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering OR be willing to attend this training on commencement

Other: Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment. This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.
