ScO Water Quality Field Technician

Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week
Pay Rate: £17.43 per hour

About the Role

We are looking for a technically capable and practical Scientific Officer to join a water quality monitoring project based at AFBI Newforge, with regular travel to river catchments and monitoring sites across Northern Ireland.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience in water chemistry, environmental science, soils research or a related field and laboratory research environment to work on an important programme monitoring the health and quality of Northern Ireland's rivers.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Maintain and operate automatic water samplers and sophisticated in-situ monitoring equipment.
• Retrieve samples and scientific data from water quality monitoring stations.
• Operate laboratory-level instrumentation used to measure nutrients and other water quality parameters.
• Carry out routine maintenance and checks on monitoring equipment.
• Undertake river flow gauging and grab sampling when required.
• Travel to monitoring sites across Northern Ireland, initially focusing on sites in the south-east.
• Transport equipment and materials to field locations, including walking to sites where required.
• Work outdoors in a range of weather conditions.
• Maintain accurate records of field activities, samples, measurements and data.
• Follow appropriate health, safety, sampling and laboratory procedures.
• Work effectively both independently and as part of a wider research team.

Essential Criteria:

Applicants must provide evidence that they meet the following eligibility criteria:

1a 2 A Levels or equivalent (including 1 in a science discipline), equivalent or higher

AND

2 years' demonstrable experience in a field and laboratory research environment relating to water chemistry, soils research or a related discipline.

OR

1b 5 GCSEs including Science, Maths and English Language (Grades A-C in the specified subjects), equivalent or higher*

AND

3 years' demonstrable experience in a field and laboratory research environment relating to water chemistry, soils research or a related discipline.

A higher qualification, such as an Honours Degree, MSc or PhD, negates the demonstrable experience requirement.'

AND

2. Possess a full, UK current or exchangeable*** driving licence from the list for manual vehicles, (to aid the successful candidate in driving an AFBI vehicle) enabling the licence holder to fulfil the duties of this role.
