Job description

Role: Waste Resource Management Chargehand

Rate of Pay: £15.31 (plus allowance £17.68)

Location: Newtownabbey

Hours: 37

Duration: Ongoing

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the day-to-day operation of Household Recycling Centres, ensuring services are delivered efficiently, safely, and in line with business objectives.
  • Assist with supervising staff, allocating resources, and maintaining high standards of performance and customer service.
  • Ensure sites are clean, compliant, and open/closed as scheduled, coordinating with contractors and internal teams.
  • Support the management and maintenance of fleet, plant, and equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and legally compliant operation.
  • Monitor the quality of recyclable materials and maintain accurate operational records and performance data.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including Duty of Care, Health & Safety, and Council policies.
  • Provide excellent customer service, handling queries and complaints through to resolution.
  • Assist in staff management activities, including attendance monitoring, training, and HR-related processes where required.
  • Promote recycling initiatives and engage with the public to provide guidance and raise awareness.
  • Support wider service delivery, including refuse and street cleansing, as required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, risk management, and achievement of key performance indicators.
  • Deputise for Supervisors when required and undertake additional duties across the Department as needed.

Qualifications

  • 5 GCSEs (including English & Maths) or equivalent

OR minimum 2 years' relevant experience

  • At least 1 year's supervisory experience in waste, recycling, or street cleansing

Experience handling employee relations, ideally in a unionised environment

Key Skills & Abilities

  • Strong organisation and time management
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Health & Safety regulations (including manual handling)
  • Basic IT skills (Microsoft Office/Windows)
  • Understanding of waste and environmental legislation

  • Full driving licence or access to suitable transport
