Legal Officer
Pay Rate: £47,304 per annum
Location: Rathkeltair House, Market Street
Hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm, Monday to Friday (Flexi available)
Contract: Temporary
Working Pattern: 37 hours per week
Job Summary / Purpose of Role
The role involves supporting the interpretation and application of EU and domestic legislation to ensure compliance and operational alignment. The post holder will work closely with DSO officials and legal colleagues to address queries and support the development, drafting, and implementation of regulations and primary legislation through the NI Assembly and/or Westminster.
The role also includes contributing to the transposition of EU legislation, policy and legislative development, stakeholder engagement and co-design, and supporting evaluation activities. The successful candidate will maintain strong working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and contribute to effective project management and governance arrangements.
Essential Criteria
- Applicants must have a minimum of 1 year's experience leading a team delivering policy or legislative work.
- They should be able to work independently while providing clear updates on progress, risks, and issues to management and colleagues.
- Experience is required in interpreting EU and domestic legislation to assess compliance and operational compatibility.
- Candidates must also have experience working with legal professionals and responding to legal queries.
Applicants should demonstrate experience in:
- Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong project management capability
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Knowledge of the Windsor Framework Agreement would be advantageous, or a willingness to develop understanding in this area.
- Experience of introducing regulations or primary legislation via the NI Assembly and/or Westminster is desirable.
- Experience in leading a team
- Experience in drafting regulations and transposing EU legislation.
- Experience in policy and legislative development using structured, evidence-based approaches is also desirable. This includes policy analysis, option development, stakeholder engagement or co-design, and evaluation.
