Location: Newforge Lane, Belfast
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week (9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday)
Salary: £24,952.00 per annum

The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) delivers world-class science to support agriculture, the environment, and the wider economy. Sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), AFBI provides evidence-based research and monitoring that informs government policy and promotes sustainability in Northern Ireland and beyond.
Within AFBI, the Agri-Environment Branch conducts essential research into environmental systems, natural resource management, and water quality.
About the Role
We are seeking an Assistant Scientific Officer - Fresh Water Quality Sampler to support environmental research projects through the collection and analysis of freshwater samples across Northern Ireland.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field sampling at freshwater sites for AFBI water quality research projects.
- Measure, record, and collate water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, and other environmental data.
- Perform laboratory work, including sample preparation and suspended solids analysis.
- Drive to and from sampling sites across Northern Ireland, transporting samples and equipment as required.
- Ensure accurate data collection and follow AFBI quality assurance procedures.
Working Conditions
- Standard hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm, Monday to Friday (37 hours per week).
- Role involves travel across Northern Ireland for sampling activities.
- Fieldwork will include working outdoors in a range of weather conditions.
Essential Criteria
Applicants must, by the closing date, demonstrate:
- 5 GCSEs (Grades A-C / 9-4)* including Science, Maths, and English Language, or equivalent/higher.
- At least 6 months' relevant experience in laboratory analysis or field sampling for environmental or water quality research.
- A full, current driving licence, as the role requires travel across NI.
