Design Lead / Senior Design Engineer (Mechanical & Electrical)
Location: Kilkenny (Hybrid)
Contract Type: Long-Term Temp Contract (6 months approx)

The Opportunity

An established and growing engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Design Lead / Senior Design Engineer to support the delivery of major Water and Wastewater Treatment projects across Ireland.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior-level contractor with strong mechanical and/or electrical design experience to join a multidisciplinary team delivering complex infrastructure projects. The role offers the chance to take ownership of technical design delivery, contribute to innovative engineering solutions, and work across all stages of project execution.

You'll be involved in high-profile projects spanning mechanical systems, electrical infrastructure, instrumentation, process equipment, and treatment plant design within a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver and coordinate mechanical and electrical design solutions for water and wastewater treatment facilities
  • Develop system concepts, plant layouts, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and technical design documentation
  • Perform and review engineering calculations including hydraulic analysis, pump sizing, pipe sizing, electrical load calculations, and system performance analysis
  • Design and specify equipment including:
    • Pumps, valves, actuators, mixers, compressors, screens, and pipework systems
    • MCCs, MDBs, LCPs, instrumentation, control panels, and electrical distribution systems
  • Produce and review:
    • Single line diagrams
    • Wiring diagrams and panel schematics
    • Cable schedules, I/O lists, and power schedules
    • Equipment and procurement specifications
  • Support automation and control system architecture development
  • Liaise with utilities, suppliers, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Coordinate with Civil, Process, BIM, Automation, and Electrical/Mechanical teams to ensure integrated project delivery
  • Lead technical reviews and ensure all design deliverables meet quality, programme, and compliance requirements
  • Participate in FATs (Factory Acceptance Testing), design reviews, and technical workshops
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant Irish, EN, ISO, IEC, and WIMES standards
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and support to junior engineers and design teams
  • Support tendering, procurement, and client-facing technical discussions where required

Requirements

  • Degree qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (Level 7/8/9 or equivalent)
  • Strong experience within Water/Wastewater, Process, Industrial, or Infrastructure projects
  • Proven background in engineering design delivery within multidisciplinary environments
  • Strong technical capability in either:
    • Mechanical systems design (hydraulics, pumps, pipework, process equipment), and/or
    • Electrical & Instrumentation design (power distribution, MCCs, controls, instrumentation)
  • Experience producing and reviewing technical drawings, calculations, and specifications
  • Familiarity with relevant design standards and industry regulations
  • Ability to manage priorities, coordinate stakeholders, and deliver to project deadlines
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and integrate quickly into project teams
