JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Youth Worker

Purpose & Objectives:
To develop and deliver drop-in sessions, diversionary programmes, and activities to young people as part of a PEACEPLUS Project. To act in a professional, proactive capacity that will contribute to the strategic aims of the organisation in enhancing the well being of carers and the children they care for.

Location: Various Locations (happy to consider home working or Strabane/L'Derry).
Salary: £28,000

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week (may include evening and weekend work).

Duration: Fixed term post (funded until October 2026), then subject to future funding.

Probationary Period: 9 months.

Annual Leave: 5 working weeks, exclusive of bank and customary holidays.

Travel: Travel expenses at the current rate of 40p per mile will be payable for mileage undertaken in connection with work.

Sickness Scheme: Operates under a Statutory Sick Scheme.

Pension: Workplace pension available for eligible job holders.

Access NI: This post requires a check under the requirements of ACCESS NI enhanced disclosure. This will involve a full criminal records check, including spent and unspent convictions, cautions, cases pending, or any other relevant information.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide a welcoming, safe, supportive, and fun environment for young people engaged in services.

  • Organise and deliver drop-in sessions, diversionary programmes, activities, training, and other age-appropriate activities for young people accessing support.

  • Organise and deliver structured workshops as part of a Good Relations Programme, including liaising with referral agents and meeting the support needs of youngsters with additional needs.

  • Establish a training programme for young people, incorporating group discussions and activities relevant to promoting good relations and peace building at a local level.

  • Work with young people on an individual and group basis to ensure quality standards are met in programme and service delivery.

  • Provide advice and assistance to children and young people, ensuring confidentiality at all times.

  • Assist in establishing a Steering Group to engage hard-to-reach young people who would benefit from structured programmes and activities.

  • Ensure areas are well equipped with educational materials and resources suitable for young people of all ages.

  • Set up and maintain an inventory of all equipment and resources.

  • Ensure the general upkeep and health and safety of indoor and outdoor activity areas.

  • Undertake risk assessments for all activities to ensure all health and safety requirements are met.

  • Collaborate with other staff members to develop support packages for young people, addressing barriers to accessing services and opportunities.

  • Work alongside individuals and organisations to establish a referral process for young people, including those living across the border in Co. Donegal.

  • Develop promotional materials and evaluation methods in collaboration with other staff members.

  • Coordinate and support volunteers and seasonal staff to maintain appropriate worker-to-child ratios.

  • Develop relationships with organisations that can provide information and support to children and young people engaging in services.

  • Undertake administrative tasks and keep records of service activity as required.

  • Deliver presentations to groups and speak at events as necessary.

  • Assist in the development of briefings, leaflets, workshops, and awareness-raising programmes and activities.

  • Respond to written and phone inquiries from parents, carers, and other individuals/stakeholders.

  • Monitor and report on outcomes, indicators, and activity levels to the Service Manager, PEACEPLUS, and other key stakeholders.

  • Establish and maintain a database for monitoring information on young people, their needs, and the support provided.

  • Ensure confidentiality and professional boundaries are maintained when working with children, carers, staff, and external agencies.

  • Ensure that any safeguarding concerns are addressed in accordance with safeguarding policies.

  • Attend regular staff meetings.

  • Assist with local fundraising initiatives when required.

  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the organisation.

  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that align with organisational goals and targets.

  • Be an active team member, supporting colleagues and contributing fully to the team workload.

  • Participate in staff meetings as required.

  • Engage in staff development and review.

  • Attend training as required for personal and professional development.
