Public Prosecutor - Northern Ireland Civil Service
Location: Belfast Chambers & Foyle Chambers
Salary: £21.99 per hour
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week (Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm)
Contract Type: Temporary (Up to 12 months)
Start Date: May 2025

About the Role:
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Public Prosecutor to join a key legal department within the Northern Ireland Civil Service, working across various locations including Belfast and Foyle Chambers. This role offers the opportunity to play a critical role in the delivery of justice through the preparation and prosecution of criminal cases.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and review prosecution files submitted by law enforcement agencies and government departments
- Advise on the viability of prosecutions in both Magistrates Court and Crown Court
- Prepare case papers and direct the appropriate charges and supporting evidence
- Undertake prosecutions across Northern Ireland, particularly in Magistrates Courts, with occasional advocacy in County Court
- Provide pre-prosecutorial advice, liaising effectively with victims, witnesses and other stakeholders within the criminal justice system
- On occasion, assist in the preparation of committal papers for Indictable cases
Essential Criteria:
To be considered, applicants must meet all essential criteria listed below:
- Be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister entitled to practise in Northern Ireland (either at the Bar of Northern Ireland or as a Solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland)
- Possess a minimum of one year's post-qualification advocacy experience in criminal cases, obtained within the last six years in a Magistrates Court environment
Additional Information:
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in the UK
- Shortlisted candidates may be required to apply for an Access NI check through Staffline, regardless of existing certification. Costs range from £16 to £32, depending on the level of clearance required
