Learning Support Assistant

Downpatrick

19 hours per week

The Role: To provide specialist disability support service to young people who require assistance whilst participating on the Skills for Life & Work, Training for Success and/or Apprenticeships NI Programme. The role will require staff to undertake administrative duties to ensure their records of support are accurate and returned timeously.

Key Job Duties:

  • Provide direct one to one and group-based disability support to an agreed schedule of activities.
  • Support the tutor by delivering the appropriate disability specialist learning support for the participant.
  • Assist the DSS co-ordinator with the monitoring and evidencing of progress against Performance Targets set.
  • Stimulate and promote effective, learner-centred independent learning strategies for the young person to enable them to participate and heighten their motivation and self-esteem.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records that support effective ongoing monitoring and review of own support provided and raise any immediate issues or concerns with line manager.
  • Ensure the following is completed:
    • DSS10s to be signed by trainee and tutor/manager and returned to the DSS admin team on a weekly basis for checking.
    • Staff engagement notes to be uploaded to the DSS APP before close of business each Friday to allow for checking by the following Monday.
    • 8/10/13 week trainee reviews (due dates to be advised by training provider).
    • Referral paperwork (DSS5) - Part B only (as and when required by training provider).
    • Consent Forms - to be signed at point of completion of the DSS5 and scanned to DSS admin team.

Please Note: DSS staff are not to carry out any teaching or programme delivery instead of the training provider, rather the training provider to lead / teach and the DSS staff member to provide additional disability support.

The key job duties listed above give a broad outline of the functions of the role. However, these duties must be approached in a flexible manner. The job holder will be expected to adapt to changing circumstances and undertake other duties as allocated by your Manager. The outline of the job duties may change from time to time.

Hours of Work: 19 hours per week Mon, Wed, Thurs 9.30am to 4pm

Requirements:

Competencies

Essential

  • Highly competent in using ICT with excellent working knowledge of MS Office Suite to include SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Desirable

  • Knowledge of directly supporting people with disabilities within an employment, education, or employment & training setting
  • The ability to work with a wide cross-section of participants with varying levels of support needs

Technical competencies (qualifications and training)

Essential

  • Educated to NVQ Level 2 or equivalent to include Maths and English.
  • Good IT skills - to present data using Microsoft packages or suitable alternative

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience of working with young people across a wide cross-section of varying levels of needs, enabling them to identify their own goals and the ability to progress them

  • Highly organised professional with evidence of developing relationships with participants
  • Ability to work flexibly to cope with the varying demands of the role and achieve desired results
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Excellent time management and the ability to prioritise a workload
  • Ability to effectively report progress on KPI's and progress participants through their qualifications within the timeframes set
  • Ability to manage a busy workload and prioritise to ensure all requirements are met
  • Ability to complete all paperwork, and reports timeously

  • Flexible, adaptable and innovative
  • Youth work Teaching / pastoral care approach to assisting young people to progress through their qualifications while maintaining professional boundaries

  • Be able to display an awareness, understanding and commitment to the protection and safeguarding of children, young people and adults
  • This post requires an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check

Candidates will require access to transport to carry out the duties of the post
