Lab Attendant
Location: VSD Stoney Road Belfast
Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)
Salary: £24,336 per annum
AFBI is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Lab Attendant to join the Bacteriology Branch within the Veterinary Sciences Division. This role is essential in supporting the production of laboratory media used in statutory, analytical, and research work on major bacterial pathogens relevant to animal and public health.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone looking to start or build a career in laboratory support services within a structured and regulated environment. All necessary training and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of laboratory media used for scientific testing and research
- Support lab operations by managing waste disposal and instrument preparation
- Coordinate cleaning and sterilisation of glassware with CSU (Central Sterile Unit)
- Organise lab coats for external laundering
- Follow procedures aligned with ISO9001 and ISO17025 standards to maintain quality and compliance
- Work in collaboration with laboratory staff to ensure a clean, safe, and efficient work environment
Essential Criteria
- Education:
- 2 GCSEs (Grades A*-C), including English Language and Maths (or equivalent)
OR - Minimum of 6 months demonstrable experience in a similar laboratory support role
- 2 GCSEs (Grades A*-C), including English Language and Maths (or equivalent)
Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience in a laboratory environment or similar support role
- Familiarity with basic laboratory practices and health & safety protocols
