Assistant Scientific Officer - Monogastric
Location: Hillsborough
Hours: 37 Hours
Pay Rate: £26,449 per annum
Job Overview
This is a fantastic opportunity to join AFBI's Monogastric Research team based in Hillsborough. The successful candidate will support scientific research focused on monogastric livestock, working under the supervision of a Higher Scientific Officer. This role combines hands-on animal work with data collection and laboratory techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow scientific protocols and standard operating procedures to ensure accuracy and timeliness of research activities
- Accurately record scientific data related to livestock and feed using manual methods and complex scientific instruments, including Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanner and Infrared thermography camera
- Operate electrical and mechanical equipment relevant to research tasks, including washing and sampling equipment
- Input data into computerized databases, generate reports especially using Microsoft Excel, and maintain accurate records
- Ensure livestock receive correct diets at appropriate times; assist with feeding of animals
- Handle livestock regularly, including sows, piglets, grower/finisher pigs, and occasionally poultry; take animal measurements and collect biological samples (blood, urine, faeces, milk, meat)
- Perform occasional dissections of pigs and poultry for scientific study
- Work physically in livestock houses maintaining health and welfare of animals, including identifying and reporting sick animals
- Drive farm vehicles and operate farm equipment to support experiments and sample collection; travel between AFBI sites, QUB, and farms as necessary
- Obtain a Personal Animal License in compliance with ASPA regulations
- Complete all duties in line with AFBI quality standards and ISO9001 technical and scientific procedures
- Work cooperatively as part of a team and independently as required
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate the following:
- 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including Science, Maths, and English at grades A-C
- Experience working with livestock such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, or horses
- Experience in a scientific environment
- Competent in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word and Excel (equivalent IT packages considered)
- Possess a full UK manual Category B driving licence which enables the postholder to drive company vehicles. Under DDA any reasonable adjustments will be considered at offer stage.
- Willingness and availability to work overtime on a rota basis
