Grassland Trials Officer
Location: Hillsborough
Hours: 37.5 hours per week including weekend and out-of-hours duties as required onsite (e.g., time-sensitive grass plot sampling, animal feeding/checking)
Pay Rate: £31,643 per annum
Job Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to support key research projects within AFBI's Grassland and Dairy Research Groups. The post holder will play an integral role in delivering day-to-day research tasks as part of ongoing studies focused on grassland systems and livestock, working closely with a team of scientists and technicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of grassland research studies in line with experimental protocols
- Work collaboratively with scientific staff and assist in coordinating work placement students
- Ensure accurate data collection, entry, and secure storage using appropriate formats (paper, digital, sensors, databases, Excel)
- Operate within commercial farm settings when required, including the use of AFBI fleet vehicles
- Assist with preparation, measurement, and sample collection during field trials
- Liaise with AFBI laboratories to schedule sample delivery and analysis
- Support knowledge exchange events and preparation of trial sites for external visitors
- Adhere to ISO 9001 standards, including compliance with SOPs, risk assessments, and calibration procedures
- Contribute to scientific reporting by compiling data and written materials for research reports
Requirements
- Essential (applicants must meet one of the following academic/experience combinations):
- 2 A-Levels (including one in a science discipline or equivalent/higher) AND 2 years' demonstrable experience in a relevant field
OR - 5 GCSEs (including Science, Maths & English Language at Grades A*-C or equivalent/higher) AND 3 years' demonstrable experience in a relevant field
3. At least 6 months' research experience involving grassland and livestock
4. Demonstrable experience with statistical analysis of research results
5. Excellent communication skills, evidenced by at least three examples of oral presentations delivered
6. Full UK driving licence
7. Willingness and availability to work overtime (weekends, holidays, early mornings, and evenings on a rota basis) - overtime is a required part of this role
