Porter with Security Duties

Newry

About the Role

You will provide the efficient movement of patients, equipment, linen, waste, blood and blood samples, post, and goods etc. throughout the hospital. The post holder will be required to work flexibly, providing an efficient and high-quality portering service to both the public and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Messenger duties throughout the hospital.
  • Convey wheelchair/ bed/ trolley patients within the hospital wards and departments i.e. X-Ray, Theatres, OPD Clinics.
  • Convey deceased patients from the wards and departments to the Mortuary.
  • Collection and delivery of blood and samples to and from the Labs
  • Removal of waste and soiled linen and return of clean linen to wards and departments.
  • Removal and delivery of furniture and equipment from wards and departments
  • Ensure working bases, equipment and vehicles are kept clean and tidy and defects are reported
  • Delivering and collecting post from wards, departments, and outside facilities
  • Keeping records of patient movement and the delivery and receipt of goods
  • Delivery of ad hoc requests from Pharmacy department to all wards and departments e.g. Medicine, Fluids, Drugs, TPN, Chemotherapy, and responsible for sign off at delivery point and Pharmacy
  • Daily collection and delivery of medical gas cylinders to wards and departments. Changing medical gas cylinders as and when required and checking cylinders for defects and reporting faults
  • Porters may be required to cover Departmental Porters when required
  • Any other duties assigned by the Portering Services Manager and deputies.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
  • Ability to use initiative and cope with emergencies in a calm manner
  • Ability to relate easily to staff and public
  • Excellent observation skills
  • Physical ability to restrain violent patients and visitors
  • Flexible, adaptable and available to work nights and weekend shifts
  • Co-operative attitude
  • Willingness to undergo appropriate training

Desirable Criteria

  • Have at least 6 months paid experience in a similar portering / security / caretaking role.

Hours of work: 37.50 hrs per week on a rota basis working 5 days out of 7 days including Bank Holiday Cover and Night Shift Duties

(Shifts are 7am - 3pm, 9am - 5pm, 12pm - 8pm, 3pm - 11pm and nights 11pm - 7am)
