Staffline is recruiting a Design Engineer on behalf of our client, with the option to be based in either Portadown or Ballymena.

This is an opportunity to take a hands-on role in developing fabricated products and assemblies, working closely with engineering, production and project teams to bring designs from initial brief through to manufacture and installation.

If you combine strong CAD skills with a practical understanding of fabrication, you will have the opportunity to influence product quality, improve manufacturing efficiency and solve real engineering challenges.

The role

Reporting to the General Manager, you will produce accurate, practical and cost-effective designs that meet customer requirements and support efficient production.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Creating detailed 2D drawings and 3D models, including fabrication, assembly and component drawings.
• Preparing bills of materials, cutting lists, material specifications and production information.
• Ensuring designs account for materials, tolerances, welding, machining and assembly requirements.
• Working closely with workshop teams to resolve technical queries and improve manufacturability.
• Liaising with customers, suppliers and project teams to clarify specifications and develop practical solutions.
• Managing design revisions and technical documentation while meeting project deadlines.
• Supporting estimating, prototype development, testing and site installation where required.
• Identifying opportunities to reduce waste, improve material use and strengthen design processes.

About you

You will bring:

• A relevant qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience within an engineering design or fabrication environment.
• Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software.
• A sound understanding of fabrication processes, engineering materials and manufacturing methods.
• The ability to interpret technical specifications and produce clear, accurate engineering drawings.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• A collaborative approach and confidence communicating with both office and workshop teams.

Experience in structural steelwork, sheet metal or bespoke metalwork would be advantageous, as would familiarity with design for manufacture and assembly, relevant engineering standards, or ERP and drawing management systems.
