Assistant Scientific Officer
Location: Newforge Lane
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week (hours may vary due to the nature of the work, there may be overtime and unsociable hours. Candidates must be flexible)
Pay Rate: £13.75 per hour
Key Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will assist with:
- Working from small boats in large and small freshwater lakes
- Collection of lake and river waters using sampling equipment
- Collection of lake and river data using scientific instrumentation
- Collection biological samples (fish and invertebrates)
- Maintenance of sampling and observation equipment
- Recording and uploading scientific data
- Laboratory work including the chemical analysis of water samples
- Laboratory work including identification planktonic organisms.
- Preparing and processing biological samples
- Other laboratory, office, and field duties as allocated by supervisors
Essential Criteria
Applicants must have:
- 5 GCSE's including science, maths & english language (Grades A*-C for subjects specified), equivalent or higher; and
- At least 6 months experience on some aspect of aquatic science data collection, including demonstrated ability to work in challenging environmental conditions.
- Must also have a full driving licence that enables them to undertake the responsibilities of the role.
Successful applicants must:
Be sufficiently fit, able and willing to carry out field work that will require manual handling, working unsociable hours (e.g. weekends and early mornings), working outside, and collecting environmental samples
Desirable Criteria:
- A third level qualification in freshwater, environmental, biological or marine science.
- Experience in data handling and data entry
- Power boat RYA level 2
- Microscopy
- Training and/or certification in first aid procedures
- Manual handling certificate / training
