Job description

Role: Waste Resource Management Operative
Location: Glengormley, Newtownabbey
Hours: 37 hours per week
Pay Rate: £13.26ph (£15.55 p/hr including allowance)

Job Purpose

To provide Waste Resource Management, Street Cleansing and Recycling Services in accordance with Council standards, policies and health & safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect domestic and commercial waste and recyclable materials, ensuring containers are returned safely after collection.
  • Assist drivers during reversing and report any vehicle faults or damage promptly.
  • Carry out street cleansing duties including litter picking, sweeping, emptying bins and maintaining public areas to Council standards.
  • Remove fly-tipped waste, bulky items, garden waste, weeds, fly-posting and other environmental hazards as required.
  • Support Household Recycling Centre operations, assisting the public and promoting recycling and waste recovery.
  • Maintain records and complete required documentation accurately.
  • Undertake alternative duties during adverse weather conditions, including gritting and snow clearance.
  • Deliver Council communications such as leaflets, stickers and flyers when required.
  • Contribute to achieving operational performance targets and maintaining high standards of customer service.
  • Attend training and meetings relevant to the role.
  • Comply with all Council policies and procedures, particularly those relating to health, safety, wellbeing and equality.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the level of the post.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Basic literacy skills with the ability to read instructions and communications
  • Minimum 6 months' relevant experience in a waste management or similar environment
  • Flexible approach to work
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Basic IT skills, including use of systems such as TMS/GPS
  • Knowledge of health & safety procedures, including manual handling and reversing assistance
  • Knowledge of waste collection, disposal and recycling practices
  • Commitment to delivering a high-quality service

Desirable Criteria

  • Valid driving licence
  • Knowledge of Safety at Work legislation
  • Minimum 12 months' relevant waste management experience
  • Knowledge of traffic management procedures
