Title - Groundsperson

Post Grade - B2

Location - NIHE Direct Derry

Weekly Hours - 37

Hours of Work - 8 to 4 Mon - Thur and 8 - 1 on Fri

Holiday Entitlement - 23 days + 12 public holidays

Additional Requirments - A full current driving licence which includes B1+E / C1+E licence category.

Operational Responsibilities

  • To drive, operate and maintain a range of mechanical/electrical equipment and machinery associated with the provision of a grounds maintenance service on a commercial scale, including rotovators, chain saws, grass-cutters, hedge trimmers, strimmers, push mowers, ride-on mowers and tractor mounted flail hedge-cutters etc.
  • To use a range of handheld equipment and tools associated with the provision of a grounds maintenance service, including include secateurs, hedge trimmers, rollers, spades, forks, and spraying equipment etc.
  • To establish and maintain shrub beds and grassed areas including reclaiming, fencing-off, ground planting & preparation, hard landscaping, removal of dead trees, planting trees shrubs and flower bulbs, fixing tree guards, staking, mulching, grading, reseeding, pruning, weeding, rolling and watering as required.
  • To clean and lift litter and larger debris from hard areas, shrub beds, rough grass, waterways and shop areas (daily), including the removal of such things as fly-tipping material, building rubble, and bonfire debris etc.
  • To spray shrub beds, tree bases and hard areas with a range of chemicals, pesticides and weed killers.
  • To load and unload all equipment, materials and waste.
  • To ensure running repairs are carried out and the minor maintenance of equipment and machinery including, for example, the sharpening, adjusting and renewal of blades as required, etc.
  • To report potential Public Liability Claims (PLICs) hazards as required. Customer Service
  • To provide a quality customer service and maintain a good customer relationship on behalf of the NIHE.
  • To ensure the health and safety of our tenants, especially vulnerable tenants and children when undertaking work in NIHE estates. Performance and Reporting
  • To ensure accurate and timely completion of all job information by both paper-work and electronic means (including use of PDAs and mobile devices) as required and pass this on to supervisor within agreed time-scales.
  • To work effectively to maximise output and ensure delivery within expected timescales.
  • To identify and highlight to supervisors potential opportunities for changes to working practices to ensure continuous service improvement. Health and Safety
  • To ensure that all work is performed in accordance with the requirements of Health and Safety and any other relevant legislation.
  • To exercise proper care in the handling, operating and safeguarding of tools, equipment, vehicles or appliances in the operation of general duties.
  • . To be responsible for the safe use, storage, handling and recording of chemicals according to COSSH procedures including under supervision as required.
  • To follow safe systems of work and risk assessments, attending toolbox talks and health and safety courses as required.
  • To use and maintain equipment such as lone working devices, mobile communications and logging systems.
  • To wear and take care of designated PPE provided.
  • To report accidents/incidents and near misses and participate in any resulting investigations as required.

General Duties

  • To carry out and complete all work to a high quality and in a competent and timely manner leaving the property in a safe, clean and tidy condition.
  • To collaborate with other staff / sub-contractors etc. as necessary to ensure the timely completion of works within agreed operational targets.
  • To provide support and cover for colleagues as required to ensure resilience as far as practicable.
  • To support and mentor apprentices, as required.
  • To attend meetings, training sessions as required, including participating in training with a view to carrying out work outside of normal trade duties, where required.
  • To undertake the duties in such a way as to enhance and protect the reputation and public profile of NIHE.
  • To comply with and adhere to NIHE frameworks, policies and procedures, including but not limited to those relating to legal requirements such as equality, health and safety and information governance.
  • To undertake any other duties appropriate to the post's objectives as required by management.
