Legal Assistant
Location: BSO, Franklin Street
Hours: Full-Time, 37.5 hours per week
Pay Rate: £12.31 per hour
Job Overview
The postholder will be responsible for the carrying out of duties delegated by the Section Line Manager/Solicitor, in support of the Solicitors undertaking their professional roles within the Legal Services Directorate.
KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
The post-holder will be required to carry out a range of duties which may include the following:-
- Assist in the preparation of documentation and pleadings in connection with referrals from clients, drafting documentation and instructions and dealing with matters arising under the appropriate legislation.
- Assist and liaise with Line Manager, Solicitors and Boards/Trusts personnel in collating material.
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of up-to-date statistics and information on the Legal Information System.
- Assists in the preparation of Briefs for Counsel and where appropriate, arranges attendances on Counsel as and when required together with the attendance of witnesses at Court Hearings/consultations.
- Ensures within their delegated responsibility that referrals and instructions from Boards/Trusts are dealt with in an expeditious and effective manner.
- Liaises with Line Manager in developing teams/staff to enhance performance.
- Liaises and corresponds with clients as required.
- When necessary assists with internal Post and provides Outside Duties/Court Run cover.
- Delegates such functions to subordinate staff as are consistent with the overall efficiency and effectiveness within the Directorate.
- Actively participates in the BSO's Performance Management system, where further specific objectives relating to the post may be identified.
- Actively participates in the Directorate's quality system procedures, including Investors in People, ISO 9001, and Lexcel.
- Carries out all other duties as may from time to time be delegated to the postholder appropriate to the grade.
- Participate where necessary in job rotation arrangements with staff of the same grade.
Requirements:
- Essential: 5 GCSE's including GCSE English Language & GCSE Mathematics (Grades A*-C) OR equivalent qualification to demonstrate literacy and numeracy OR Higher Qualification
- Experience: Have a minimum of 18 months' relevant experience
