Our client Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council are currently looking for a caretaker to join their team in Dervock, Ballymoney, on a part time casual basis.
Main Purpose of Post
- Responsible for the day-to-day security, safety, cleanliness and general maintenance of the building and site assigned to.
- Ensure that the facility complies with all statutory and legislative requirements by adhering to these requirements and working in accordance with good governance and health and safety requirements.
- Ensure that all responsibilities are carried out in a courteous, timely and effective manner and that general confidentiality is maintained in all areas relating to the work of the Council.
- By its nature, the post will require flexible working to meet the needs of the service. When necessary, attend meetings relevant to the efficient operations of the facility.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Open and close the facility as required including checking that the premises, any associated outbuildings/facilities and perimeters are properly secured: this includes, but is not limited to, turning off lights, heating/ventilation systems and setting intruder alarm as required.
- Liaise with appropriate staff/user groups to ensure halls, rooms and associated facilities are set up to meet various user specifications. This will include setting up and taking down of equipment, tables, chairs, notice boards and other relevant equipment required for the booking and preparing/assisting with set up for functions and special events e.g. elections.
- Undertake cleaning of the entire premises including toilets, halls, offices, meeting/multi-purpose and playgroup rooms, social areas, kitchens, storage rooms, changing facilities, referee facilities including the safe operation of cleansing machines and chemicals where appropriate.
- Carry out general grounds' maintenance, clean and litter-pick external facilities including playing surfaces/areas, backyard, forecourts, footpaths, car parks gritting during winter months including the safe operation of any maintenance/cleaning machines.
- Act as the designated key holder and responsible for on-site facility users, visitors, contractors and attend to rapid response and emergency callouts as required.
- Responsible for the effective operation of various systems within the building such as fire alarms, intruder alarm, CCTV, heating, lighting, plumbing and audio-visual systems. Ensure energy usage is not excessive by turning off lights, heating and equipment when not in use.
- Provide information, be courteous and direct or assist members of the public, user groups, contractors and external agencies with regards to the facility as appropriate.
- To arrange to clear blockages, remove foreign matter from sinks, toilets, drains, kitchen grease traps etc. and clean up spillages as required. Undertake basic general maintenance and minor repair work within and external to the facility.
- Assist with fire and security drills and with the evacuation of the building should it become necessary and ensure clear and safe pedestrian access to facilities particularly in adverse weather conditions e.g. clearing snow, gritting etc.
- Clean light fittings and to test lighting systems weekly replacing where necessary minor parts such as tubes, bulbs, fuses starters and diffusers, in accordance with safe working practices.
- In line with health and safety regulations ensure safe storage of cleaning materials and facility equipment taking responsibility of the identification of hazards and safeguarding the public within and external to the facility.
- Report all accidents and complete all the necessary documentation.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding bookings and facility users.
- Engage with the public in the delivery of services providing guidance and assistance where required in a co-operative and courteous manner and at all times being aware of their needs.
- Carry out weekly and monthly legionella checks throughout the facility. Maintain and record logbooks for legionella, fire and incident reports as necessary.
- Adhere strictly to all safety and quality standards. Report serious hazards, damage, defects and vandalism immediately to your line manager and undertake completion of any associated paperwork.
- Ensure adequate stock levels of cleaning, stationery and toiletry supplies for the smooth operation of the building and inform your line manager in a timely manner for re-ordering. Assist with the collection of cleaning materials from the Council Yard when appropriate.
- Responsible for the acceptance, checking, appropriate storage and use of any deliveries including the use of mechanical aids where necessary.
- To comply with and actively promote the Council's Health and Safety Policy and Procedures and more specifically to observe Health and Safety guidelines including the wearing of PPE and not working above a height of eleven feet without appropriate training or assistance. Ensure that Council policies and procedures on child protection and vulnerable adults are adhered to at all times.
Essential Criteria
Applicants must, at the closing date for receipt of applications, demonstrate by providing personal and specific examples that they possess a minimum of six month's experience in each of the following areas:
- Basic general maintenance in a similar work environment
- Cleaning in a public use building
- Dealing with the general public
- Record keeping
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities attached to the post such as manual handling, COSHH regulations and working with electrical appliances and emergency procedures.
