Principal Legal Officer

Salary: £32.05 p/h

Location: Belfast

Hours: 9am - 5pm, Mon - Fri / 37 hours per week

Duration: Temporary ongoing

Job Summary:

  • To advise on litigation in which client departments are involved, in particular DFI, in the HighCourt and County Court, Judicial Review Court, Court of Appeal, statutory appeals to the Magistrate's Court and Upper Tribunal Administrative Appeals Chamber (Transport)
  • Working collaboratively with the client and Counsel drafting pleadings and other documents; assembling instructions to Counsel, instructing for consultations and at hearing and providing some advocacy services to client departments in Courts and Tribunals.
  • To provide a litigation service, particularly but not exclusively, to DfI, at all levels of Courts and Tribunals to include the Court of Appeal, High Court, County Court, Judicial Review Court, Magistrates' Court and Upper Tribunal Administrative Appeals Chamber (Transport); for example in relation to judicial review challenges to planning permission, roads policy; personal injury actions, statutory applications/appeals re driver and freight operator licensing, trespasser eviction, vehicle impounding etc.
  • To support the work of the Assistant Director as part of an agile and responsive legal team.

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister, entitled to practice in NI.
  • Minimum of 3 or more years post-qualification experience.
  • Have three years' professional experience of delivering a litigation service to clients.
