A recent article from the BBC highlighted how AI is changing the way candidates and employers interact throughout the recruitment process.
One candidate, Tom, a recent Geography graduate, described applying for almost 200 jobs before finally securing a position. He described the experience as both “exhausting” and “demoralising”, particularly when many employers did not respond to his applications.
Like many jobseekers, Tom turned to AI to help manage the volume of applications he was submitting, using it to refine his CV and cover letters.
However, the article also highlighted some of the challenges emerging as AI becomes more widely used. Employers described instances where candidates appeared to be using AI live during interviews, with some very clearly reading from generated responses rather than answering questions themselves.
This raises an important question: How can candidates use AI more consciously when applying for jobs?
At Staffline Recruitment Ireland, we see first-hand how technology is changing the recruitment process. While AI can be an extremely useful tool, the candidates who stand out are increasingly those who can adapt to technological change while continuing to rely on their own skills, experience, judgement and personality.
The aim should not be to use AI to apply for as many jobs as possible. Instead, it should help you become more intentional about the opportunities you pursue and strengthen the quality of each application.
Through our experience working with employers across the island of Ireland, we have developed a bespoke AI CV Builder which allows candidates to build and tailor their CV for specific job roles. This can help candidates present their skills and experience more effectively while ensuring employers receive more relevant, high quality applications.
But creating a stronger CV is only the first step.
We recommend a more considered approach to using AI throughout the job application process. Here are some practical tips to power YOU in the search for a new role:
- You are the unique selling point - remember a company wants to hire you as the individual, not an AI version of you, make sure your skills and personality come through in your application.
- Check the employer’s guidance about using AI - every company has their own approach to the technology, demonstrating your understanding of that will be a strength when applying.
- Be selective with your applications – Avoid the ‘spray-and-pray’ approach of submitting large volumes of generic applications. Instead, invest your time in applying for roles that align with your skills and career aspirations, focusing on employers you genuinely want to work for.
- Keep interviews authentic – Avoid relying on AI-generated responses during the interview itself. Employers want to understand your knowledge, experience and ability to think independently.
- Review and refine AI-generated content – AI can help structure and improve your CV or cover letter, but it is important to check the accuracy and relevance of any suggested content. Ensure that your application accurately represents you.
By combining technology with your own research, experience and personal strengths, AI can become a useful support tool rather than something that takes over the application process entirely.
