Public Prosecutor (SCU)

Salary: £24.59 p/h

Location: Belfast Chambers

Hours: 9am - 5pm, Mon - Fri / 37 hours per week

Start date: ASAP

Duration: Up to 12months

Job Summary:

The primary purpose of the SCU Casework Team Public Prosecutor is to undertake legal activities, duties and functions in support to Directing Officers making prosecutorial decisions on serious offences in the Serious Crime Unit. The role holder will apply PPS practice, procedures and time limits in respect of allocated caseloads and to keep up-to-date with developments in criminal law and the criminal justice system.

The primary objectives of the role holder will be to:

  • Provide professional, appropriate and timely recommendations as to appropriate prosecutions within time limits as specified by the PPS to SPPs.
  • Provide correct and timely advice as to prosecution, no prosecution or other form of disposal in any cases to be referred upwards to a SPP.
  • Engage and consult with victims, witnesses, counsel and police in accordance with PPS policy and under direction.
  • Handling sensitive disclosure and liaising with issuing authorities.
  • Review charges preferred by police and reach correct decisions as to the continuance of such charges to court and to ensure that evidence standards support recommendations to prosecute.

Essential Criteria:

  • In order to be designated, the successful applicants, at the time of appointment, must be a Barrister or Solicitor who is entitled to practise either at the Bar of Northern Ireland or as a Solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland.
