Speech and Language Therapist, Band 6 x 2

Craigavon & Newry

Temporary for 6 months initially

(30 hours)

The Client: Local Healthcare body based in the southern trust area, serving local residents.

The Role:

The Speech and Language Therapy service in Sure Start aims to enhance the communication skills and communicative environment of all children in the Sure Start area, in order to provide a firm foundation for social, emotional and educational development.


As part of the above key responsibilities, the post holder will:

  • Provide a high level of expertise in the promotion and development of children's speech, language and communication skills.
  • Adopt a flexible approach to giving advice, information and support to enable parents/carers and Early Years workers to promote the development of attachment, bonding, speech, language and communication skills in children of 0-4 years of age.
  • Be responsible for the management of the complex caseload of children attending Sure Start.
  • Liaise closely with parents/carers and provide specialist advice and support regarding their child's speech, language and communication needs to ensure best outcomes
  • Work collaboratively with the Sure Start team in the development and delivery of Sure Start programmes and achievement of service outcomes.
  • Work in close liaison with the SHSCT Speech & Language Therapy Service to ensure efficient and effective management of children identified with speech, language and communication needs, monitoring and evaluating the outcomes of clinical practice.
  • Make onward referrals to other professionals as required.
  • Liaise with all other relevant Health and Education staff, and all appropriate personnel working in non-statutory organisations.
  • Co-operate with the Lead Sure Start Speech and Language Therapist and Sure Start Project Manager in the development of efficient and effective models of intervention and service delivery.
  • Assist in the planning, design and implementation of innovative and evidenced based ways of working with parents and Early Years workers.
  • Assist in the planning, design and evaluation of training and therapy programmes, ensuring regular updating to reflect current clinical practice and evidence base.
  • Participate in the development of clinical practice and clinical governance in collaboration with the Lead Sure Start Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Work in accordance with the SHSCT and Sure Start policies, procedures and guidelines including the Safeguarding Policy.

Hours of work: Mon- Thursday - 30 hours


  • At least 2 years post-qualification experience as a Speech and Language Therapist, to include a minimum of 1 years' experience working with 0-4 year old children within the last 5 years.
  • Degree / Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy

OR a related Degree with postgraduate qualification in Speech and Language Therapy

AND Registered member of HCPC and RCSLT

  • Experience of planning and delivery of relevant SLC training programmes/packages to parents/carers/others.
  • Experience of working with groups of children.
  • Postgraduate training and /or experience in relevant courses e.g. Makaton, Derbyshire Language Scheme, Hanen, Elklan.
  • Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment.

Knowledge/ Skills / Abilities

The Post-holder will be expected to:

  1. Be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  2. Maintain clinical knowledge and skill through a programme of continuous professional development.
  3. Maintain up to date records of all annual leave, sick leave, and study leave, reporting absence in line with Trust and Departmental policy.

The post-holder may be required to work weekends, evenings and statutory days. In response to continued service development the duties of the post may be conducted over a 7 day period
