Our client, a large Public Sector Organisation requires a Mechanic based in Ballymena.

Role: Mechanic

Location: Ballymena

Hours of work: 37 hrs per week 1 PM finish on Friday

Hourly Rate: £13.91

LOCATION OF POST:

Ballymena

MAIN PURPOSE

To contribute, to the provision of a modern, professional and responsive service to support NIHE business delivery by providing an inspection, servicing and repair service for Housing Executive vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment while upholding safety guidelines and complying with all applicable Codes and Regulations in line with our vision and values as outlined below.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Responsibilities

  1. To thoroughly examine and inspect the condition, roadworthiness and safety of any vehicle or equipment, applying correct inspection techniques, reporting the findings and making recommendations to workshop supervisor.
  2. To service, repair and prepare vehicles for PSV/MOT in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner, in accordance with specified timescales.
  3. To conduct routine repairs and major services on a broad range of grounds maintenance equipment.
  4. To apply appropriate diagnostic techniques to determine the cause[s] of defects in vehicles, plant, components and systems, including use of a diagnostic computer.
  5. To make any recommendations for changes or modifications designed to improve safety, efficiency and reliability in vehicles, plant, components and systems.
  6. To assess bodywork issues, identifying, advising and carrying out the most appropriate bodywork repairs to vehicles and plant.
  7. To recover broken down or immobilised vehicles, plant and equipment utilising safe and proper techniques, thereby minimising any risk of additional damage or danger to both employees and the public.
  8. To manufacture / fabricate simple component parts to the required performance standards, using appropriate materials, tools and machinery.
  9. To ensure that replacement parts are clearly identified to enable timely ordering to minimise downtime.

Performance and Reporting

  1. To ensure accurate and timely completion of all job information by both paper-work and electronic means (including use of PDAs and mobile devices) as required and pass this on to supervisor within agreed timescales.

  1. To work effectively to maximise output and ensure delivery within expected timescales.

  1. To identify and highlight to supervisors potential opportunities for changes to working practices to ensure continuous service improvement.

Health and Safety

  1. To ensure that all work is performed in accordance with the requirements of Health and Safety and any other relevant legislation.

  1. To exercise proper care in the handling, operating and safeguarding of tools, equipment, vehicles or appliances in the operation of general duties.

  1. To be responsible for the safe use, storage, handling and recording of chemicals according to COSSH procedures including under supervision as required.

  1. To follow safe systems of work and risk assessments, attending toolbox talks and health and safety courses as required.

  1. To use and maintain equipment such as lone working devices, mobile communications and logging systems.

  1. To wear and take care of designated PPE provided.

  1. To report accidents/incidents and near misses and participate in any resulting investigations as required.

General Duties

  1. To carry out and complete all work to a high quality and in a competent and timely manner leaving the property in a safe, clean and tidy condition.

  1. To collaborate with other staff / sub-contractors etc. as necessary to ensure the timely completion of works within agreed operational targets.

  1. To provide support and cover for colleagues as required to ensure resilience as far as practicable.

  1. To support and mentor apprentices, as required.

  1. To attend meetings, training sessions as required, including participating in training with a view to carrying out work outside of normal trade duties, where required.

  1. To undertake the duties in such a way as to enhance and protect the reputation and public profile of NIHE.

  1. To comply with and adhere to NIHE frameworks, policies and procedures, including but not limited to those relating to legal requirements such as equality, health and safety and information governance.
  2. To undertake any other duties appropriate to the post's objectives as required by management.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must provide evidence by the closing date for application that they meet the following essential criteria:

  1. Have successfully completed an apprenticeship in vehicle / plant maintenance (either time served, or skills based).
  1. Have a NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Light Motor Vehicle Repair Studies

  1. Have a minimum of one year's relevant* post apprenticeship experience working in a vehicle maintenance environment.

*Relevant experience will be interpreted as working as a mechanic on light motor vehicle repairs/plant maintenance.

  1. Can demonstrate practical knowledge and understanding of current Health and Safety requirements and legislation in a maintenance/repair/engineering environment.
  2. Can demonstrate (Assessed at Interview):
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work to deadlines.
  • Strong customer focus
  • Accurate record keeping and attention to detail

  1. A full current driving licence to enable the post holder to carry out the required duties of this post

Desirable Criteria

  1. Have three year's relevant* post apprenticeship experience working in a mechanic environment

*Relevant experience will be interpreted as working as a mechanic on light motor vehicle repairs/plant maintenance.

  1. A full current driving licence which includes C1 licence category.
