Band 2 Decontamination Technician for a large public sector organisation based through the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust

Location: Ulster Hospital

Pay Per Hour: £11.45

Working Hours: 7.30am - 3.30pm OR 11am - 7pm Shift Rota

JOB SUMMARY/MAIN PURPOSE:

Staff will contribute to the effective delivery of Decontamination services provided at the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust as directed by policy, procedure training and assessment. Working under supervision of SATO, staff will decontaminate medical devices / endoscopes according to manufacturer's instructions. Utilising knowledge of how items from all departments are collected, identified and separated for processing, staff will prioritise and process equipment according to the identified user's needs, and identify faulty or damaged medical Devices/endoscopes and report them to the supervisor. Staff will ensure items are clean, dry and suitable for packaging and will maintain accurate recording systems and optimum standards of cleanliness and sterility. Staff will also ensure adequate stocks are readily available in the work area. Staff are required to successfully complete all training in decontamination technology through a bespoke dedicated programme that will allow them to demonstrate skills in the CSSD department.

MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Receipting and checking of contaminated medical Devices/endoscopes.
  2. Checking of medical Devices/endoscopes against specified instrument tray list.
  3. Decontamination of medical Devices/endoscopes using validated washing techniques and equipment in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  4. Inspection, testing and assembly of complex medical devices/endoscopes-adhering to policy, procedures and training.
  5. Document and report discrepancies, damage and losses to equipment accurately as per departmental policies and procedures on departmental performa.
  6. Checking, packing and labelling of complex medical Devices/endoscopes.
  7. Operation of decontamination and sterilization machines and other associated equipment -in accordance with training and standard operating procedures (SOPs) thereby in compliance with manufacturer's guidelines, complying- with HTM 01-01 and HTM 01-06 (Health Technical Memoranda). These standards incorporate the decontamination of both medical devices and endoscopes.
  8. Recognising and reporting any machine faults to Supervisor or Manager.
  9. Accurately monitor decontamination processing data using departmental performa, to ensure compliance with processing limits as per departmental policies and procedures.
  10. Participate in on-going training and continuous development to allow staff member to fulfil role and expand knowledge of complex surgical instrumentation and decontamination processes. Full training in all areas of the Trust sterile service will take approximately 24 months.
  11. Issue of sterile packs including pre- sterilised packs purchased from other suppliers.
  12. Collection of contaminated medical devices/endoscopes and delivery of medical devices/ endoscopes to designated areas within the hospital.
  13. Care and maintenance of medical devices/endoscopes some of which have multiple-components and are fragile, delicate and expensive.
  14. Adhering to health and safety policy and SOPs as detailed within procedures, guidelines and training programmes.
  15. Operate and fully comply with the department's computerised instrument tracking and traceability system commensurate with role.
  16. Monitoring accepted stock levels and identifying items that require ordering by authorised officer. Checking in and storage of in-coming deliveries.
  17. Complying with the departmental policies and procedures, to ensure that the required quality management system BS EN ISO 13485: 2016 is maintained.
  18. To demonstrate flexibility to ensure that service needs are met. Manually inspect and quality assure sterilised medical devices and endoscopes including checking packaging is intact and ensure decontamination status is labelled correctly to allow for final release.
  19. Such other duties as may be determined by the Service Lead (Decontamination) relevant to post and the needs of service.
  20. Will be required to participate in the Trust's annual staff review processes.
  21. All staff must adhere, at all times to statutory and regulatory requirement and departmental procedures and will be accountable for their performance.
  22. The post-holder is expected to communicate - orally and electronic. Expected to take phone calls from various staff, clinical, engineers, sales representatives in a polite helpful manner and pass on accurate information to line managers and colleagues.
  23. Record accurate, legible information when recording information into log books and using traceability systems etc. The post holder is expected to participate in audits as required for the service.
  24. Perform E.T.S daily testing for validation of sterilizers which supervisors sign off.
  25. To ensure all machinery used in the decontamination, sterilization, and chemical disinfection processes are tested.
  26. Weekly water sample taken for TVC testing for endoscopy,
  27. Compliance with all Trust policies and procedures

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • A minimum of two GCE's/GCSE's Grade A-C (or equivalent) in English and Maths

AND

  • 6 Months experience in a production environment. e.g. factors production, cssd production, and laundry production

OR

  • 2 year's experience in a production environment. e.g. factors production, cssd production, and laundry production

  • Must be willing to be flexible and participate in shift patterns across the 24hr period.

  • Be willing to successfully undertake relevant training /professional development as required to meet the service need.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • To have previously worked within a large Central Sterile Supplies Department (CSSD) in the public sector.
